Mary Choice (formerly Sullivan) is interviewed by Edward Clark Smith on March 21, 1987 as part of the Western North Carolina Tomorrow Black Oral History Project. Born in 1898, Choice discusses moving to Asheville with her family in 1927 from South Carolina after their farm failed. She recalls working her first job at Scott’s Boarding House and her husband, Prince Choice working at a construction company and Oteen. She remembers attending dances at clubs, tithing in church, and caring for people in the community through the Maids and Matrons Club. She compares past and present marriage and parenting practices. She describes cooking, Christmas, and a big flood that occurred during her childhood. Choice also discusses improvements in race relations since integration.
