The document about the slave Venus in this collection is actually a story of Venus from the Clement Dowd biography. It is one page 13 of Life of Vance. Dowd describes Venus as the "warm-hearted old servant who helped rear the children." A footnote about Venus explains her purchase by the Vances in 1844.
