Title

Enslaved People of the Vance Birthplace

Subject

A publication with all of the information researchers could find regarding the enslaved people who lived and worked at the Vance Birthplace.

Description

Information about enslaved people who lived at the Vance Birthplace. Census records are often of little help when researching enslaved people. The earliest records only count the number of slaves, with no regard to age or gender. Although the details improve with time, the names of slaves were never recorded in census records. Owners' wills and deeds of sale are often more useful, with enslaved peoples' names and occasionaly ages, listed in these records. Letters and biographies of slave owners may also mention slaves. These sources are mose useful for the few slaves who can be found in multiple records and who stayed in one place or with one family. Many slaves, however, are only recorded once or twice and little is known about them. The Vance Birthplace has worked to find out as much as possible about the slaves owned by the Vance family and has recorded that information in this document.
